Indian attire the new dress code at YMCA varsity convocation- 1-Jan-1900
Chandigarh: The YMCA University of Science and Technology, Faridabad, has rolled out an ethnic dress code for its convocation function this week, ditching the traditional black robes and square hats.
For the February 15 convocation function, the students have been asked to follow the new dress code, a Haryana government release quoting a YMCA spokesman said here.
The YMCA university is a state university.
The male students have been asked to wear white full sleeves shirt and white trousers with black shoes or white 'kurta' and 'pyjama' with black shoes or sandals.
The women students will wear white sarees with golden border or white 'kameej' with white 'salwar', white 'dupatta' with black shoes or sandals.
The faculty and guests will also adhere to a similar dress code, it said, adding a decision to this effect has been taken by the university authorities "to simplifying the dress code".
Haryana's Health and Sports Minister Anil Vij has been a strong votary of ditching the conventional black gowns and in March 2015 had refused to attend the convocation of a college in Ambala Cantt, the assembly constituency he represents, as students were donning gowns for the ceremony.
A few months later, Vij had expressed strong reservation over the "colonial legacy" of wearing black gowns by degree recipients and had asked the BJP government in the State to consider introducing a new dress code for such functions, pointing out that "Indian dress will be better in place of heavy black gowns used during convocations".
The minister had then also written a letter to Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma, saying the colonial legacy of black gowns for convocations should be barred in educational institutions in the state.
Over a year back, Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar, had decided to replace the conventional black gowns worn during convocation with a white dress code for students who were to be awarded their degrees.
This would be the second convocation of the university and degrees would be conferred upon the students who have passed out in the years 2014, 2015 and 2016.
Haryana Governor, Kaptan Singh Solanki, who is also the Chancellor of the University, and Vice-Chancellor Dinesh Kumar will preside over the function and confer the degrees.
Haryana Education Minister, Ram Bilas Sharma would be the Guest of Honour and Chairman of University Grants Commission, Ved Prakash would also deliver the convocation addresses.
