New Delhi: JNU condoled the death of its former Vice Chancellor Prof B B Bhattacharya who passed away at a hospital in Dwarka here.
Bhattacharya was JNU VC from June 2005 to January 2011 and had passed away yesterday.
"It is a matter of deep sorrow to know the passing away of Prof BB Bhattacharya, former Vice Chancellor of our university yesterday afternoon in a hospital in Dwarka," present JNU VC Prof Jagdesh Kumar said in his condolence message.
He added that Bhattacharya had contributed significantly to enhance the prestige of the university.
Recipient of several awards and honours, including France's Order de Palms Academiques, Bhattacharya is survived by his wife, daughter and son.
"The Jawaharlal Nehru University community expresses its profound sorrow and sadness in the sudden passing away of Prof Bhattacharya and pray for courage to his family and well wishers to withstand this irreparable loss and give them strength to sustain this difficult moment," he said.
Bhattacharya was a distinguished and reputed economist of the country with worldwide repute. He was associated with various institutions within the country and outside in important capacities.
