Australia to improve research collaboration with India - 13-Apr-2017

Chennai: The Group of Eight (Go8) Australia, which is comprised of Australia’s eight leading research-intensive universities - with six of its members ranked in the world’s top 100 universities - is currently visiting India with Australia’s Prime Minister and Minister for Education.

The 27-member Go8 delegation made up of five Vice Chancellors, their deputies, deans and researchers is the largest Australian University contingent to visit India.

As part of Go8 Australia’s visit to India, The Australian Trade & Investment Commission, organised a colloquium in New Delhi.

The Go8 Australian delegation led by Professor Peter Høj, Chair of the Group of Eight Universities (Go8) and Vice Chancellor and President of the University of Queensland interacted with Vice Chancellors, deans, academics and researchers of India’s leading universities and research institutions at the colloquium.

The Go8 already has an array of very successful collaborative research projects with India. The colloquium is designed to expand research collaborations, projects and partnerships between the Go8 and their Indian partners.

The Colloquium also focused on increasing numbers of opportunities for quality Indian PhD students to study in Australia. The Go8 is committed to PhD programs that create high quality industry-ready PhD graduates whose research can benefit the people and the economies of both countries.

Go8 Chief Executive Ms Vicki Thomson said “the Go8 is a quality research education destination. We award half of all research doctorates in Australia and we are committed to ensuring more quality Indian PhD students want to, and are able to further their research studies with us. We are also committed to increasing the number of successful collaborative research projects that our universities undertake with India.”

Speaking about the Go8 Australian delegation visit to India, Leonie Muldoon, Senior Trade & Investment Commissioner – South Asia said, “Australia’s universities and research institutions are among the best in the world and offer significant potential for partnerships in research. As the Indian government and industry pushes forward with “Make in India” the need for research & development is heightened even further”.

“Australian universities and research institutions are ideal partners for Indian universities, research institutions and corporates for joint research projects and programmes for new product development; new technologies & processes; novel & advanced materials and new solutions to meet India and Indian corporates’ growth challenges.”, said Leonie Muldoon

  • The colloquium focussed on the following areas
    PhDs’ development in India and the role played by PhDs as an enabler of Indian R&D
  • The demand for PhDs from Indian industry and the disciplines/capabilities of PhDs needed by Indian industry
  • The needs of both Indian and Australian industry, universities and government regarding a PhD qualified workforce.
  • Strategies for ensuring the mobility, and joint-training of a PhD qualified workforce between India and Australia.

Training of quality PhD students in Australia

The Go8 is mapping the way forward between Australia and India for PhD training and the successful delivery of PhD student mobility between India and Australia. The Go8 is also establishing a Go8-India Advisory Taskforce aimed at creating high quality industry-ready PhD graduates able to supply their skills and knowledge to priority areas of need for both India and Australia.

Working jointly with Indian researchers, the Go8 will continue to undertake high-quality research programs and projects in medicine, agriculture, water-resource management and energy research.
