Prof. Banshidhar Majhi appointed new Director of IIITDM - 16-Aug-2017

Chennai: Prof. Banshidhar Majhi has been appointed as the new Director of IIITDM, Kancheepuram after approval by the President of India.

Prof Majhi's appointment for the post will be effective for a period of five years or till he attains the age of 65, whichever is earlier, in accordance with the terms and conditions laid down in the IIIT Act.

An appointment letter in this regard has already been issued by the chairman, Board of Governors, IIITDM Kancheepuram, which Prof Banshidhar Majhi has accepted and taken over this position on 26 July 2017.

Prof Majhi is a Computer Science engineer, a renowned educator and a prolific researcher. His significant contribution in the study of Image Restoration, Video Compression, Biometrics, Soft Computing, Optical Character Recognition, Image Super-resolution, Biomedical Image Processing, Wireless Sensor and Actor Network greatly inspired the scientific community.

His early contributions in “System and method for detecting objects in videos acquired with static camera”, “Position and time localization of occlusion between two objects using a static camera” are still widely cited.

As a teacher, Prof Majhi has developed several new courses and taught subjects related to video compression and biomedical image processing.

Dean of Academics at NIT- Rourkela till now, also visited as a Professor to the Department of Computer Engineering, King Khalid University, Abha, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and also visited as an Assistant Professor to the Department of Computer Engineering and Information Technology, Al-Hussein Bin Talal University, Ma’an, Jordan.

Prof Banshidhar Majhi is a recipient of Samanta Chandra Sekhar Award  by Odisha Bigyan Academy for the year 2016, JC Bose gold medal for the best Engineering Paper from IETE in 2004.

He has published about 65 peer-reviewed papers, supervised 15 PhDs, 75 M Tech and 150 B Tech theses, carried out four sponsored projects worth over Rs 50 Lakhs, and also awaiting for two patents to his credit.
