Amaravati: In an "extraordinary" decision, Andhra Pradesh minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao announced that six of the 54 students, who were recently suspended from the IIIT for ragging their juniors, are being terminated from the institute.

Fifty four students of IIIT at Nuzvid in Krishna district were placed under suspension last week after an internal inquiry revealed their involvement in ragging.

"Given the gravity of the matter, we further looked into the issue and decided to remove six students, who were largely responsible for the illegal act, from the institute. They are being issued TC (transfer certificate) immediately. It is sad, but we decided to act tough to ensure such incidents do not recur," the Human Resources Development Minister said.

He made the announcement after a meeting with Vice-Chancellor of RG University of Knowledge Technologies, Ramachandra Raju.

Of the remaining, nine were being suspended for a year, but they would be allowed to appear for the final examinations.

The rest were being suspended for two months, the minister added.

"We had to take this extraordinary decision in view of the happenings in some educational institutions. It's sad but we need to act tough," Ganta added.
