Nearly, 90 per cent of the total global trade is carried out through ship and sea. 

Although, at present over 60,000 ships are available across the globe the number of new ships put into practice is consistently increasing.  Apart from this, several new ports are coming up to facilitate increase in volume of trade. 

In ship building industry, numerous diverse jobs like navigator, hitrographer and chef are on the offer. As for as, India is concerned, even amidst economic downturn the shipping industry showed significant stable growth. India stands 14th in the area of shipping trade at the international level.

India possesses about 550 ships, 12 major ports, 187 minor ports and a long coastline stretching about 7157 Kms.  The most significant feature of this industry is that India stands second after China.  Indian ports bring around 95 per cent of the total volume of trade and 70 per cent of the total value of the nations trade.    

In this industry related to ship, several employment opportunities in the form of onshore jobs and offshore jobs are available.  It is inevitable to transport things like machines, spare parts, cargo supplies, wheat, rice and fuel from one country to the other without sea route.  As the need for this transportation increases, apart from developing global trade the call for larger ships has also increased tremendously. 

It is expected that in the next 4 years, over 7, 000 ships are likely to be set out. Hopes persist to expand the size of ports to handle new larger ships. Technical persons large in number are required in various segment of onshore assignment in the shipping industry. Some of the varied segments that provide good job opportunities are ship navigation, rules and regulations of the sea and foreign trade. 

In ships set for voyage, every officer in the vessel has a distinct role to play in the safe journey of all passengers and the ship. Ship Captain, Engineers, Helmsman, Communication Technicians and Officers in charge of supplies and port all work in coordination with one another.  
 
After studying in certified institutions such as T.S. Chanakiya and T.S Rehuman on the successful completion of plus two with core subjects like Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry it is possible to become marine engineers. Persons completing B.E or B.Tech in nautical science can also get employment in this field. Only if the certification is obtained from Mercantile Department and Director General of Shipping these courses could be considered as a recognized one. It is possible to earn from Rs 35,000/- to 8 Lakh in this segment.  There is a constant need for specialized persons to work in this industry.  

Excellent job opportunities are also available for those willing to work in offshore assignments like port management, container and terminal operations, towage and pilotage and dredging. Several job opportunities are available to those completing specialized studies in segments like commerce, finance, marketing, supply chain, transport and port management. Persons who update their skills according to the needs of the job and work with commitment always have excellent opportunity to join this industry.
