Due to the recent developments many students are enthusiastic about taking up courses related to biology and medicine.

Primary objective of Bio-Medical Engineering is to employ Engineering principles and technology in the field of medicine. Now, the situation is such that the gaps between the two fields are narrowing.  Instruments, technologies brought out by the engineering sector in association with departments like biology and medicine, facilitates to diagnose and treat diseases.

Research and its development activities are considered very important aspect in this particular field. With the new advancements in the field of Bio-medical technology, the medical sector uses some latest gadgets like ECG, EEG, EMG, Sensors, CT Scan, MRI, Cardiac Pacemaker and Mechanical Respirator.

With the assistance of Bio-Medical Engineering, several laser operations are conducted in the hospitals nowadays. Earlier several bottles blood were required for an operation, but today, with the technological advancement in this field it is possible to carry out an operation without the need of blood and knife, with the help of laser.  Further, it also comprises of artificial heart, pacemaker, artificial valve, artificial limbs, ultrasonic equipments and cryosurgery.

Divisions:

Like any other engineering department, Bio-Medical engineering too consists many branches.

Bio-Instrumentation: With assistance of electronics, this segment helps to diagnose and treat patients diseases with appropriate value and measure.

Bio-Materialize: Engineers of this branch design and make artificial organs or parts for replacement surgery.

Bio-Mechanics: It is the branch of science utilizing mechanical application in the segment of Medicine and Biology. Through this science, a fractured bone and pacemaker is fitted on to the body to ensure the proper functioning of the human system.

Cellular-Engineering: Through this science it is possible to understand all the details about the cells in the human body.

Tissue Engineering: Diseases can be treated through tissue culture- tissue development. Particularly, this science helps to treat diseases related to the kidneys.

GeneticEngineering: It is learning all about genes and other relative spheres.

Clinical Engineering: Here, it is possible to study details about medical instruments and other equipments.

Orthopedic Bio-Engineering: It is the division that develops artificial bones and joints after carrying out profound studies about the functioning of the bones, nerves, joints, muscles.

Navigation systems: Bio-engineers develop digital images of the human parts with the help of computer software. It is useful in the latest laser technologies.

B.E., and B.Tech studies are available in the field of Bio- engineering.  It is obligatory to pass plus two with subjects like Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

PG courses:
Further, person having completed ECE., EEE., and E& I are eligible to join PG studies in this field. Persons having completed B.Sc., after completing PG studies can latter join the field of Medical Electronics.

Job Opportunities:

Lot of opportunities are available to work in healthcare institutions. Job opportunities are available at the levels like technicians and manager. In India, not much bio-medical equipment manufacturing units are available. Although, very few units are found, most of them are multinational companies.

These manufacturing companies do require bio-engineers, they are also ready to provide excellent pay package. Approximate pay package is likely to be somewhere between 2 to 2.5 lakhs per annum. But, these units select highly experienced persons, talented students and students with good scores from premier education institutions like IIT and VIT. Scope for job opportunities in foreign countries are very bright. Hence, this segment has an exceptional development than other industries.
