Bangalore: Following complaints of fall in standards of teaching in government schools due to use of cell phone by teachers, the Karnataka government has banned teaching staff from using the gadget during class hours in the state.

Speaking to reporters here today, Minister for primary and higher education Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said strict action would be initiated against the teachers who use mobile phones during class hours.

"We have received complaints that the quality of teaching is suffering due to frequent disturbance by cell phones. All teachers from primary schools to high schools will now switch off their mobiles while in school," he said.  He said the government had however kept out headmasters and principals of the schools from this rule.

In a bid to eliminate tampering of attendance registers the government had asked all teachers to write present or absent in Kannada. At present the letters P and A used could be easily manipulated, he said. He said the government would be bringing out special text books this year also and they would come with lamination. The text books were getting printed at a cost of Rs 65 crore and for the new academic year text books and uniforms would be distributed before the schools start, he added.
