New Delhi: As the UGC faces the prospects of being replaced by an overarching body, its employees today threatened to launch a strike if they are not automatically shifted to the proposed National Council of Higher Education and Research.
Nearly 600 employees of the University Grants Commission (UGC) are have launched a black badge protest since yesterday, demanding they be shifted to the NCHER after it is created. The employees are protesting the absence of a clear-cut rehabilitation policy for them in a draft Bill for creation of NCHER.
The ministry proposes to set up NCHER which would subsume the existing bodies like UGC, AICTE and NCTE. The draft NCHER Bill, prepared by a task force of the ministry, is silent on how to rehabilitate the employees of these organisations after the Commission is set up. There are about 600 employees in UGC, 150 in AICTE and 100 in NCTE
