IGNOU holds workshop on Art and Literature - 16-Feb-2010

New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) today began a seminar-cum workshop focussing on the art and literature of the Bhils and Gonds.

Titled ''Art Forms of Marginalised Communities: Bhils and Gonds'', the workshop is being organised from February 15 to 17 by IGNOU's Dr B R Ambedkar Chair for Social Change and Development in collaboration with the School of Performing and Visual Arts, IGNOU.

The Seminar-workshop will focus on the art and literature of the Bhils and Gonds. It will include both painting and poetry compositions, as well as a painting and a writers' workshop-discussion group.

The Seminar-workshop will also include paintings of wildlife, plants and people drawn by these tribes. It will give allow some of the prominent Adivasi artists speak for themselves.

Bhils and Gonds, both prominent among the Adivasi communities of India, have a long history, going back millennia. The Bhils, for instance , have been mentioned by Ptolemy's 'Traetus on Geography' as the 'Pyllitai. They also find a mention in Ashokan edicts. The Gonds have an equally proud history.
