If you didnt make it to BA Journalism in any of the colleges that offer the programme, dont get disappointed. Short-term courses run by a few colleges through some varsities are available. One such programme is a six-month certificate course in journalism and mass communication.

Although six months programme do not provide much scope as the 2 year PG studies or 3 year UG studies, the programme is quite comprehensive covering six subjects: mass media and society, reporting and editing, video location production, electronic media, dvertising and corporate communication, and web journalism and design. These subjects are taught by experts from the media industry as well as academia from the Indian Institute of Mass Communication. 

As this segment of work involves lot of writing admissions are based on entrance exam, followed by an interview. The test will test the students on language proficiency, general knowledge, media awareness, ability to observe and analyse, and creativity. Weightage for the written exam is 80 per cent while the interview accounts for the other 20 per cent.

Another choice is to complete a language studies as an under graduate (English, Tamil and Hindi), as well as focus to develop strong writing skills, powerful comprehending skills and appropriate pronunciations during the three year period. With some strong base in grammar and language after the completion of UG studies in language take up Diploma or Diploma in Journalism. Pursuing Journalism through this path could reap excellent results, as your language base would corroborate to the works of Journalism.

In the southern states few education institutions that offer short-term Journalism courses include Universities like Madras, Annamalai,  Madurai Kamaraj, Osmania, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Bharathidasan, Mysore Vishwavidhyalaya Karya Soudha Crawford Hall and University of Mysore.
