Once your name is selected, you are sure to get an opportunity in any one of the services. The prospect of joining the Indian Police Service is more for those who score high marks.
If you are selected to join in Indian Police Service, you are placed in any one of the states or Union territories depending upon the vacancy there. This allotment is based on the state ranking you have obtained. One third of the vacancies in the state are filled up by the candidates of that state itself and the rest of the vacancies, by the candidates from other states.
If you hold the first rank among those passed in IPS services from your state, then you are sure to get an opportunity to work in your state itself. If not, you are likely to be appointed in other states. So, if you want to work in your own state, you must try to come within the first few rankings.
