All that makes the difference between a successful student and an unsuccessful student is the ability handle the available time in the most appropriate manner. At the very instant of stepping into college a student must realize that they have a mammoth task ahead of them.

Getting carried away by the excitement of the freedom, friendship, relationships and youth hood, would lead to great loss at the end of the college days.

Many students fails to learn that managing their time is one of the most challenging -- and difficult -- aspects of being in college. With lot of reading to done and keep track of, strong time management skills can make the difference between a success and failure at the end of the final year.

1. Start using something

Start using something like a small notebook, cell phone, digital diary or even the latest sophisticated laptop to plan or schedule your time. No matter what it is, though, make sure you start using one.

2. Jot down everything

Note down everything in one place. Having to many calendars or gadgets just gives you more to do amidst an already tight schedule.

Right time for scheduling is when you are about to go to sleep, when you are going to do your washing work, when you're going to call your parents.

3. Allot some time to relax

Don't forget to allot time to relax and breathe. Just because your calendar goes from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. it doesn't mean you can keep a tight schedule.

4. Try new systems

If your cell phone calendar isn't big enough, use a paper and notebook. If your paper keeps getting torn, try a digital diary.  If you have too many things to be written down each day, try color-coding to help simplify. Only very few college students make it through their studies without some kind of calendaring or scheduling system. Well, if you are a person who needs one, keep trying until you find one that fits you.

5. Allow for flexibility

Things inevitably come up that you weren't expecting. Maybe, you may not have anticipated an invitation from your friend for his birthday celebrations. Have enough time available in your planner so that you can adjust a little time when needed.

6. Plan ahead

If you have a large research paper due for the last week of the semester, work backward in your calendar and figure out how much time you need to write it, how much time you'll need to research it, and how much time you'll need to pick your topic. If you think  you'll need six weeks for the entire project, work backward from the due date and schedule the time into your calendar before it's too late.

7. Plan for the unexpected

Sure, you might be able to complete two papers and a presentation during midterms week. But what happens if you catch cold the night you're supposed to be pulling the all-nighter? Expect the unexpected so you don't have to spend more unplanned time trying to fix your mistakes.

8. Plan an outing at the end of arduous schedules

Certainly, midterms are a big worry, but it will all be over Friday by 2:30. Plan for a fun afternoon and a nice dinner out with some friends, you surely will need it. But, dont keep dreaming about it right from the beginning of week, when midterms are going on.
