Merchant Navy a good choice for adventourous persons- 4-Jul-2011

Merchant Navy (or Merchant Marine) refers to the merchant field of a country, which varies in capacity. Sea-farers on merchant vessels, who hold various military like ranks and responsibilities sometimes members of various maritime trade unions are required by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers to carry Merchant Mariners.
 
Courses : Career in Merchant Navy can be pursued either as an officer or a rating in mainly two specialized fields, i.e. Marine Engineering and Nautical (deck).
 
To become a seafarer, following streams of entries (Pre-Sea courses) are available to Indian citizens in the Government as well as in private training institutions (recognized and approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping:-
 
3 year degree course in Nautical Science for (10+2) students.
4 year degree course in Marine Engineering for (10+2) students.
2 year course for Diploma Holders.
1 year course for Graduate Mechanical Engineers.
3 month course for Deck Cadets for (10+2) students.
 
Function and Responsibilities : The navigating officers who qualify from Training Ship Chanakya are responsible for the navigation of a ship, loading and discharging of cargo, maintenance of ship, safety of passengers and crew and observance of various national and international codes of conduct, insofar as they relate to sea transportation.
 
The Marine Engineering Research Institute takes up the responsibility of operating and maintaining ships main engines and auxiliary machines as also safety equipments.
 
The highest post of navigating officer one can expect to attain on board a merchant ship is that of a master of a ship. While in the case of a Marine Engineer the highest post is that of a Chief Engineer of ship.
 
Remuneration : Pay and Perks offered by merchant navy are excellent. A navigating officer and marine engineer gets Rs. 60000 per month in India whereas Rs.1,20000 p.m. abroad.
