In the production and utilization of Polymers, Polymer Engineers use regulations and principles of Chemical Engineering. They carry out in-depth study about the features of plant design, process design, thermodynamics and transport.

They monitor the production of Plastics and Polymer. At the production front they happen to supervise the molders and technicians.

Several varied courses are available both through UG and PG programmes. B.E., and B.Tech., studies are offered as Under Graduation Programmes and M,Tech as Post Graduation Studies are available. Those having completed plus two with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics can join B.E., and B,Tec., studies  in Polymer Engineering.

These courses are also named as Polymer studies as well Plastic Engineering. Person having completed this course can directly work in the production wing of Polymer production and Research centers.  In order to join this course it is necessary to do well in the entrance examination at the state and national level.

In order to join M.Tech Polymer Engineering or Plastic Technology it is important to have completed B.E or B.Tech in Polymer Engineering or Plastic Technology or Rubber Technology or Mechanical.  Even those who have completed MSc in Chemistry or Physics can also apply. For those getting good scores GATE exams to educational institutions come forward to provide education opportunity inn this segment.

Persons completing this study opportunities are available in Production and handling industries such as Production Supervisor, Quality Control Inspector, Production Planner, Mold Designer, and many more jobs. Good job opportunities are available in Public sector and Private sectors as well. Plastic, Automotive, Electronics, Aerospace, Power Transmission manufacturing units provide good job opportunities.

Polymer Engineers, Polymer Technologists, Polymer Scientists get job offers in Central Governments Petroleum and Natural Gas Limited, ONGC, Oil India Limited, Petro-Chemical Engineering Plants, Indian Institute of Petroleum in various states, Polymer Societies, Petroleum Conservation Research Association of India and Petro-fills Cooperative Ltd.

After the completing B.E., or B.Tech, initially those getting employed as Polymer Engineers are sure to get Rs10, 000 to Rs15, 000 as salary. Later, the benefits for Polymer Engineer are excellent after few increments and other promotions.

Experience, qualification, skill play a very important role to get good salary. Generally, those working in private companies get excellent pay than those working public sector. Senior Polymer Engineers and Scientists working in this segment for over 5 years are likely to get very good salary from Rs 30,000 to Rs 80,000.

In the past few years several new educational institutions have started providing Polymer Engineering courses. This course is offered through intuitions like IITs, NITs, BITS at Mesra, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Maharashtra Institute of Technology, Pune, Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology, Punjab, Sri Jaychamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore, University college of Engineering, Thodupuzha.

Recently, few colleges in TamilNadu have started to offer this engineering course for Polymer studies.
