Rural management is the specialised function required for rural enterprises, especially producers'' co-operatives with modern processing units. Rural management experts can help these units and enterprises to market consumer goods. They also help to set up rural enterprises, to realise the untapped potential in rural areas of the country 

Rural development projects addressing the needs of specific groups of people and geographic regions, as well as those of individual commodities, are being implemented all over the country. Some of the examples which can be listed in this aspect are the Revolution flood/operation flood, Green revolution. All these are due to sustained rural development actions. Given the magnitude of our rural population the Government of India has worked up to the fact that proper rural development will yield good income prospects. Therefore, the government is encouraging the professionals to set up industry and development process in rural areas. Apart from the Government of India many voluntary agencies and private companies are also supporting rural development and rural management. Professional management, firmly grounded in the realities and nuances of rural problems, is expected to extend the base of development activities in the rural segment.

The main work for a rural management professional is:

         Planning systematic development of the region where he/she is working.

The person is expected to collect the necessary data on topics like illiteracy rate, nourishment rate, development of women and social relevant information. These data are further classified into broader heads and many plans done accordingly

Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA) is a unique institution in the sense that it provides professional education to train managers for rural management 

The 2 year full time programme prepares candidates for challenging managerial responsibilities in the rural co-operative sector and development organisations. Candidate seeking admission to the programme must be a graduate with a minimum aggregate of 50%. Selection procedure consists of a written test, group discussion and personal interview. Candidates selected on the basis of the written test are called for group discussions and personal interviews
