Chennai: With the class 12 common examination issue just been resolved, higher education institutions across the state are gearing-up for a new academic year with predictions that more students are likely to take up Engineering studies rather than medical as the state is yet to decide on NEET.

Higher education institutions are speedily preparing for another academic year after Covid 19 lockdown was enforced.

It is likely that more students to play it safe this year are likely to take up engineering studies as the Tamil Nadu is yet to take a definite stand on medical entrance admission in the state.

Tamil Nadu ministers are vocal about doing away with NEET and carry out medical admission in the state based on plus two marks. In this situation, students seem to be seriously inclined towards taking engineering studies rather than risking to take a go at medical studies admission. Predicting this move, colleges and higher education institutions are swiftly acting on getting the campus ready.

In an interview, Jayaprakash Gandhi, academic advisor said, parents and students are in a fix on how marking is to be carried out after the plus two exams had to be cancelled due to the prevailing pandemic situation in the state. Parents need to understand that higher education is going to bring about enormous job openings in the next few years, subsequently witnessing a major shift in the economic situation.

Apart from academic excellence and skills, students need to be extremely sound in technology. In the last year, though nearly 8.4 core jobs were lost due corona in domains such AI, Data Science, Computer Technology, the World Economic Forum foresees that new jobs would come up for 9.6 crores.

Even banking jobs that require extreme skills apart from a higher education certification, in the future would demand technological skills. As a result the country’s premier institutions like IIT& IIM, have started offering several add-on courses online. Further, more certification courses are to be offered through the NEP.

In recent days, several corporate honchos like Google, Microsoft, and HCL are giving more importance to their certification programmes. Students having completed schooling are groomed through a certification programme and absorbed in the respective company itself. Hence, students pursuing higher education need to take this new trend seriously and equip themselves with some add-on courses. Studying foreign languages like French, Japanese or German can be considered as a good option.

Besides regular studies, students and parents must be well prepared for an economic boom through some add-on courses that improve technical skills as well as other needed skills for employment.

The academic advisor stressed the need for a 4 month bridge course for students joining college as it would facilitate refreshing the nuances of studying as the entire academic year was washed out due to pandemic lockdown.

Good economic growth would be only possible if the pandemic is brought under control for which it’s exceedingly important for all above 18 years to get inoculated. It’s greatly advisable to get vaccinated for those planning to go overseas for education or jobs, he added.

Former Anna University VC, Balagurusamy said that the present economic sluggishness is more temporary. Scope for engineering jobs is as usual good. In the days to come, there will be huge growth in fields such as IT, Manufacturing, Medical Equipments, Food Technology and Automobile Accessories & Spares.
Job opportunities’ are immense right from big corporates to the smallest industries.

Students with sound analytical skills in various spheres can opt for engineering studies. Apart from having sound knowledge in their domain, they should acquire knowledge in other areas too. If students’ possess the needed skills for the industry, providing jobs and salary would not be a barrier for companies, he said.
