Sainik School- a stepping-stone to NDA - 21-Jan-2012
Sainik School, Amaravathinagar is an English medium, residential school for boys providing public school education with a military bias upto +2, as per the Central Board of Secondary Education Syllabus.
The endeavor of the school is to prepare the boys academically, physically and psychologically for entry into the National Defence Academy.
The then our Defence Minister, Mr. Krishna Menon initiated the concept of Sainik Schools in early 1960s. Mr. Menon felt that a school with rudiments of a military way of life should be established in each state of our country would go a long way in building up an infrastructure for intake into the NDA. Thus Sainik schools came into being in each state. He was of the view that such institutions would serve as an ideal alma mater for not only the hardy, intelligent sections of the boys from elite group, but from the rural areas of our country too.
This school is one of the 26 Sainik Schools of the country. It was started on 16th July 1962. Started with just 98 students, presently there are over 650 students studying in the school.
With classes from 6 to 12 under the CBSE model, here the students are trained in various art and defence forms like shooting, horse riding, trekking, parachute jumping and designing of ship and aircraft models. Furthermore, they are also taught Karate, Swimming and Athletics.
In common with other Sainik Schools, admission into this school is through a common entrance exam at the All India level, conducted every year for admission to only for 6th and 9th standard. Apart from the entrance exam physical fitness test is also conducted for the admission into these schools. These students who stay in hostel are also provided with training to get into NDA (National Defence Academy)
Functioning with motto, CAN DO IT , students of these schools are provided education through military style. Several students coming out these schools have joined the army at the officer category. Lots of have also joined very high positions in Government sector. Many are also functioning as IAS, IPS officers. Apart from this, every year many students coming out form these schools are selected to join the National Defence Academy.
