In an effort to bring out the latest changes available in virtual learning, Kalvimalar brings excerpts from answers shared by Sameer Raje, GM & Head of India & SAARC Region, Zoom Video Communications Inc.

1. What role have collaboration platforms played in enabling educational institutes to sustain their programs?

Today, educational institutions are gaining access to advanced tools that will enable them to transform education, and the adoption will accelerate as those tools become more accessible. Video communications platform supported in maintaining educational continuity in the absence of in-person options, and helped students, parents and teachers feel more secure than in-person learning during the pandemic. It also empowered some students with access to classes they did not have access to in person.

In India, collaboration platforms have played an important role in limiting learning loss during the pandemic; reshaped and transformed higher education by enhancing access for learners.

The faculty uses video to collaborate, connect, and build relationships with their students and colleagues, even when they are not on campus. Virtual or hybrid classes and meetings are just as effective as in-person gatherings for disseminating information or presenting reports and proposals. Meetings and classes are recorded so those unable to attend live in either format can catch up later.

2. Please elaborate on some innovative features designed for virtual classrooms?

Zoom Whiteboard, gives educators a virtual whiteboard to share ideas, visually break down concepts, and allow students to work together to solve problems. Faculty can also brainstorm and collaborate on curriculum

development, lesson plans, and more.

Rearranging the Gallery View can be handy for teachers to create a virtual seating chart for their students. The Gallery View order can now be saved for use in future sessions.

Focus Mode was developed to allow instructors to see all students’ videos, while only allowing students to see their teacher. This promotes educational equity by helping all students feel comfortable and also reduces visual distractions from classmates.

Breakout Rooms now, enables to show videos with audio for a richer content experience, hosts can broadcast the audio and video from a screen share in the main session into Breakout Rooms.

Zoom Chat can be a great tool for real-time and asynchronous communication with students outside of class.

We have also introduced the ability to record a video message up to three minutes, which goes directly into a chat channel.

Now, you can also rename students in the Waiting Room before admitting them to the main Zoom session, which can help affirm a student’s gender identity and preferred name or masking the names of those in attendance from other participants to allow you to host student groups more anonymously.

3. Can you throw light on the importance of maintaining a secure learning environment?

Secure collaboration is fundamental for success irrespective of what industry you work in. As organizations navigate the next phase of work and learn to operationalize the hybrid workforce, security is more important than ever. By leveraging technology that deploys easy-to-use security features to support the hybrid workforce, organizations will create a scalable and realistic approach to security that will continue to evolve as the business does. To help make sure their virtual classroom isn’t interrupted by outsiders as schools and campuses embrace the hybrid learning model, teachers need the right security tools readily available.

4. How are collaboration platforms adapting to continue to remain an integral asset to educational organizations now that they are embracing physical classrooms again?

People across the globe agree that going forward, everything will have a virtual or hybrid component including education. This is true for the academic and administrative side of a school or university.

Zoom is continuously developing new products, features, and partnerships designed to empower and engage with hybrid models through connected workstreams.

5. What are your plans for this market?

Traditional, non-traditional, and corporate learning structures will blend, along with demand beyond the degree for micro and stack-able credentials to up-skill, re-skill, and “newskill” the workforce. Institutional operations are increasingly optimized to serve students, faculty, staff, and other constituents for hybrid environments.
