B.Sc. Radiotherapy or Bachelor of Science in Radiotherapy or B.Sc. (RT) is an undergraduate program that deals with ionizing radiation deposits energy, to destroys cells in the body being treated by damaging their genetic material, making it impossible for these cells to continue to grow. Radiation therapy, also known as radiotherapy, often abbreviated RT, RTx, or XRT, is a treatment used against cancer and, less commonly, thyroid disease, blood disorders and noncancerous growths. The treatment owes its existence to a combination of the scientific disciplines of physics and biology. This radiotherapy technology course is a full-time programme 3 year course with classes on physics applied to radiotherapy, human anatomy and all types of cancers treated by radiotherapy. It will also provide practical training in the operation and handling of the treatment machines. Another unique feature of this programme is that the students are given appropriate communicative skills to enable them to provide the needed emotional support as part of quality patient care. As radiation used for patient treatment involves high energy X radiation and Gamma radiation produced in Linear Accelerators and Cobalt machines, they have to be handled with care by only skilled personnel who are trained to use these machines or equipments. A statutory regulation of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), Mumbai, mandates use of these machines only by staff trained by authorised institutions. As for as syllabus is concerned, apart from English for communication and Computer application, the topics to be covered are Human Anatomy, Physiology, Basic Physics, Radiation Physics & Basics of clinical radiography/imaging, Radiotherapy Physics & Principles of Radiotherapy, Radiotherapy Techniques , Tumor Pathology and Radiotherapy applications, Radiotherapy Equipments Applications & Maintenance, Radiotherapy Techniques and Recent Advances in Radiotherapy Techniques.
