Radiography is a segment of medical related career option that diagnoses the ailment and diseases of the internal parts of the body using X-ray, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, CTscan, MRI, Angiography and PET technologies. It helps in getting an image of internal body parts and their functioning that helps the doctors to easily diagnose the extend of disease and can suggest effective treatment process and procedure.

There are two types of radiography: diagnostic and therapeutic.

Diagnostic radiography is concerned with operating radio imaging machines and interpreting results. But therapeutic radiography involves treatment of cancers, ulcer and tumors with the help of radiation technology.

Details of the course:

One year certificate course and two years diploma course are offered in radiography. Besides the above courses, B.Sc degree in Radiography is also offered by some institutes.

Eligibility for admission into degree courses is a  minimum qualification of 10+2 pass in science with mathematics, physics and chemistry.

Career Prospects:

Day by day, the need for radiography professionals is increasing with many getting conscious about health and many types of ailment creeping up acroos the nation . As more and more sophisticated machines are coming up in health care sector (radio diagnosis and radio theraphy) there is an increase in the need of radiographers. As a result, there are multiple employment opportunities for radiographers in India and abroad. They are required in government as well as private hospitals. Besides, private nursing homes, diagnostic centers and super specialty hospitals are preferred place for radiographers. Self-employment opportunities is also possible in this field. Highly qualified can teach in medical colleges and institutes.

Research activity options are also available to radiographers. Indian radiographers are in high demand in abroad particularly in Western European countries, USA and Gulf countries.

To meet the increasing demand for radiographers in India and abroad, several medical colleges offer courses in radiography.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi; Apollo Institute of Hosptial Management and Allied Sciences, Chennai; Christian Medical College, Vellore; Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital, Darbhanga; Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College Hospital, Bangalore; Dr. M.V. Shetty Institute of Health Science, Mangalore; Agartala Government Medical College, Agartala; Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad; Gauhati Medical College, Kamrup; Madras Medical College, Chennai; Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh; National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore are some well known institutions that offer courses in Radiography. 

Pay package: 

Certificate or Diploma course can help you could start as an assistant or aide to the radiographer/ radiologist, at a lower salary ranging from Rs.  6,000 to Rs10,000. 

Radiographers working in government hospitals can earn somewhere between Rs 12,000-15,000 per month. Private hospitals and clinics offer more lucrative pay packages to radiographers. There are huge demands of Indian radiographers in abroad. They offer high pay packages along with many fringe benefits.

A postgraduate would obviously earn in the higher bracket, Rs. 20,000 plus can be expected with no work experience. With work experience, the salary would obviously be higher.

But a good radiographer with PG qualification can expect Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 40,000 within a year of two of practice.
