Pharmacists, also known as chemists or druggists are healthcare professionals who practice in pharmacy, the field of health sciences focusing on safe and effective medication use.

Pharmacists undergo various level education (Diploma/ UG/ PG/ Doctorate) to understand biochemical mechanisms of action of drugs, drug uses, and therapeutic roles, side effects, potential drug interactions, and monitoring parameters. Pharmacy studies is mated with anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.

Earlier, fundamental role of pharmacists is to check and distribute drugs to doctors for medication that had been prescribed to patients. But, in modern times, pharmacists also provide advises to patients and health care providers on the selection, dosages, interactions, and side effects of medications, and act as a learned intermediary between a prescriber and a patient.

Pharmacists must obtain a university degree at a pharmacy school or related institution work or to run pharmacy stores.  Pharmacists are educated in pharmacology, pharmacognosy, chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, microbiology, pharmacy practice (including drug interactions, medicine monitoring, medication management), pharmaceutics, pharmacy law, physiology, anatomy, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug delivery, pharmaceutical care, nephrology, hepatology, and compounding of medications.

A Bachelor of Pharmacy (abbreviated BPharm) is an undergraduate academic degree in the field of pharmacy. The degree is the basic prerequisite for registration to practice as a pharmacist in many countries. In some countries, it has been superseded by the Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) and Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degrees.

In India, Bachelor of Pharmacy degree is popularly known as B-Pharm. It is a four-year program with both annual and semester schemes available. In order to be eligible, one must pass with at least 50% marks in 10 + 2 (or an equivqlent examination) with biology or biotechnology as one of the subjects. However, in some states additional pharmacy entrance examination is a must in order to be eligible for the course.

D.Pharm (Diploma of Pharmacy) holders are eligible for admission into B.Pharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy) into the second year directly through Lateral entry.

Pharmacy studies like D.Pharm, B.Pharm, M.Pharm or Pharm D) must be approved either by All Indian Council of Technical Education (AICTE) or Pharmacy Council of India (PCI).

Just like medical proffession (Physician Practice - Doctors), strict regulations are implemented by Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) to be employed as well as to run pharmacy stores.

There is a good range of employment opportunities for students that range from hospitals to manufacturing industries to research laboratories. In hospitals, they are in charge of the procurement, stocking, preparation and dispensing of drugs and health accessories. Many completing pharmacy studies can opt for pharma manufacturing companies, research laboratories, pharam or medical representatives, hospitals, pharmacies and set their own drug stores.

Salary package for pharmacist at hospitals having completed degree studies would be around Rs 12,000 - 16,000 for freshers and gradually would get a decent hike. But, several private reputed hospitals offer better pay package.
