One among the Institutes of National Importance, Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are a group of institutes of higher education in India, focused on providing quality higher education to those inclined towards information technology.

Established by the central government, centrally funded, and managed by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, these institutes were conceived with the objectives of developing professional expertise and skilled manpower in Information Technology (IT) and related areas.

Admissions into undergraduate programmes in IIITs are through the Joint Entrance Examination JEE.

For example, IIIT Allahabad offers a B.Tech degree in either Information Technology or Electronics and Communications Engineering. Admission is through JEE-MAIN.

In IIITA, foreign students are accepted based on SAT II scores.

Three postgraduate programmes are offered, Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Information Technology (MBA-IT), Master of Science (M.S.) in Cyber Law and Information Security (MS-CLIS), Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Information Technology, and an integrated M.Tech in Bio-Medical Engineering.

Admission to the MBA-IT programme is based on CAT scores and an entrance test, interview & group discussion. Admission to the MS-CLIS program is based on an entrance test and an interview. Admission to the M.Tech programme is based on Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) scores and on a written test or interview.

However, some IIIts also offer PhD programmes
