Based on the recommendation of Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, the Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), established five Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) in 2006.

Located in Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal and Thiruvananthapuram, these institutes are a unique initiative in science education in India in which teaching and education are totally integrated with the state-of-the-art research nurturing both curiosity and creativity in an intellectually vibrant atmosphere of research.

IISERs are autonomous institutions awarding its own Masters and Doctoral degrees. IISER encourages to carry out research projects during the vacation periods in the first four years of their Masters programme in various research institutes outside IISER.

In the integerated or dual degree programme, the first two years of the 5 year programme involves coursework in all subjects (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Humanities and Interdisciplinary courses). For the next two years, the students choose courses across subjects, as per their desire. And the final year is spent on a research project.

Programmes & Admissions:

Integrated Master's (M.S.): Admission to this program is after 10+2 years of school training and is currently on the basis of performance in the JEE Advanced. Further, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) scholars are also considered for admission.

Doctoral Program (Ph.D.): Admission to the doctoral program is after a Master's degree in science. Besides the students of the Integrated Master's program, Postgraduate students with a Master's degree in science from other institutes are also eligible to be admitted to the doctoral program.

Integrated Doctoral Program (Int. Ph.D.): Admission to this program is after a B.Sc. degree in any of the basic sciences. Students of this program start their course by attending their class with third year students of Dual Degree B.S.- M.S. course.

Scholarship:

BS-MS students are eligible for either KVPY or INSPIRE scholarship.
