Facilitating to synergize between research and science higher education, National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) was established at Bhubaneswar in 2006. Operating under the umbrella of Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) of Govt. of India, this premier institution for scientific research was envisaged in lines with IISC , Bangalore and IISERs.

The National Institute of Science Education and Research is dedicated to graduate education and research only. It offers a five-year integrated M.Sc. as well as Ph.D. degrees in pure and applied sciences.

Presently, NISER offers 5 year integratated M.Sc. programme in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

Students graduating after 10+2 years of schooling (or equivalent) are admitted into NISER's integrated M.Sc. programs through a competitive annual examination, the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST). From a total of 70,000 applicants nationwide, only 0.325% qualify for admission, making it more difficult to qualify than the IITs.

From 2010 January, NISER started offering Doctoral Programme under the guidance of faculty members to students with Master degree in basic sciences, e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.

To get admission, students have to qualify the CSIRNET/GATE/ NBHM or equivalent examination valid for the current year in the relevant area of research.

Scholarships:

NISER has been included in the list of a selected few institutions whose students directly qualify to receive scholarship under the Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE) category of the INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) programme launched by Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.

All admitted students will receive a scholarship of INR5000 (US$80) per month which should be sufficient to meet the course fees and boarding costs. Students will also receive a contingency grant of INR20000 (US$320) per year to facilitate their academic pursuits.

Presently, NISER functions from the Institute of Physics (IOP) Campus, near Sainik School, Bhubaneswar and is expected to move to a new independent campus that is located at Jatni in the Khurda District, about 4kms from the Khurda railway station which is about 20kms south of Bhubaneswar Railway Station and about 25kms from the existing Bhubaneshwar airport.
