Parliamentary panel sought for ensuring OBC reservation- 8-Sep-2011
New Delhi: Around 50 OBC MPs cutting across across party lines today made a strong plea for immediately setting up a Parliamentary Committee to ensure a fair deal for the backward classes.
In a memorandum submitted to Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, the MPs, including V Hanumantha Rao, convenor of the Parliamentary Forum of OBC MPs, RJD chief Lalu Prasad, BJP's Hukumdev Narayan Yadav, said that setting up of a Parliamentary Committee for OBCs was the need of the hour.
Claiming that the percentage of OBC officers in Group A and Group B posts was a mere 5.5 per cent and 3.9 per cent respectively, they said that there has "not been any improvement" in the lot of the backward classes despite announcement of 27 per cent reservation.
"The lack of commitment on the part of the implementing agencies raises serious doubts on the effective implementation of the Mandal Commission recommendations and also on the commitment of 'social justice' given to the people of India by the Constitution," they said.
The MPs said it was "regrettable" that out of the 27 per cent reservation for OBCs a "significant" 20 per cent of posts remained unfulfilled.
They therefore wanted an official mechanism like the Parliamentary Committee to monitor the implementation of the reservation policy for OBCs.
Signatories to the memorandum included BJP Deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gopinath Munde, Ram Gopal Yadav (SP), Gangacharan Rajput (BSP), Sameer Bhujbal (NCP), Tiruchi Siva (DMK), Magani Lal Mandal (JD-U).
