Mumbai: Maharashtra Government decided to hike the wages of Shikshan Sevaks (teaching assistants) in the state substantially while changing their current designation to Assistant Teachers (Apprentice).

The salaries of shikshan sevaks working in primary schools have been enhanced from Rs 3000 to Rs 6000, from Rs 4000 to Rs 8000 in the secondary schools and from Rs 5000 to Rs 9000 for the higher secondary and junior colleges.

Initially, the cabinet note had proposed hike from Rs 3000 to Rs 5000 for the primary school teaching assistants but PWD minister Chhagan Bhujbal proposed that the wages be hiked to Rs 6000. Industries Minister Narayan Rane seconded the proposal.

Talking to reporters, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said the new wages will come into effect from January 1, 2012.

As many as 45,000 shikshan sevaks will benefit from the decision.

Chavan said the change of designation to Assistant Teachers (Apprentice) was effected keeping in mind the demand by the Shikshan Sevaks who believed the current name of their post was "insulting" to them.

The cabinet also decided to hike the wages of the Gram Sevaks on contract system from Rs 2500 to Rs 6000.

At present, there are 27,920 gram panchayats and 19,345 gram sevaks employed in the state out of which, 4866 gram sevaks are hired on contract basis.

"The proposal for hiking the wages of the gram sevaks on contract was pending for long. It will be implemented from January one, 2012," Chavan said.
