VSS Medical College closed sine die following clash- 8-Sep-2011
Bhubaneswar: VSS Medical College at Burla was closed indefinitely by the Orissa government following a clash between agitating students and local residents that led to imposition of prohibitory orders in and around the campus.
The college has been closed sine die with immediate effect and all students have been asked to vacate the hostels and leave the campus by tomorrow, Health Minister Prasanna Acharya told reporters.
The minister, who held a meeting with senior officials to review the situation in the medical college campus, said the authorities have clamped prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC following student-public clash in which both sides resorted to stone-pelting.
One person has been arrested in connection with the incident.
A report from Burla said the clash took place when a large number of people stormed into the campus and demanded resumption of normal health services at the hospital which were hit for the third day today as students and junior doctors boycotted classes and stalled work.
The situation was brought under control following intervention by police, official sources said.
The students and junior doctors have been agitating since Monday against alleged attack and loot of some students by a group of outsiders at a restaurant near the campus on Sunday night, police said.
Alleging that they have been facing attacks and threats from anti-social and criminal elements operating near the campus, students are demanding immediate arrest of the culprits and better security in and around the campus.
Security personnel have been deployed in the area to prevent any further flare up, the sources added.
