Mumbai: City-based Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), has secured the top position in the BioSpectrum Biotech School survey.

The BioSpectrum Top Biotech Schools study includes those institutions, which offer BTech, Masters and PhD courses in the subject. Faculty, industry interface, infrastructure and placements are some of the most important parameters for it. BioSpectrum is a Bangalore-based CyberMedia Group magazine.

Professor G D Yadav, Vice Chancellor of ICT told that his scored over the nearest rivals in the areas of faculty strength and industry interactions.

"It is noteworthy that ICT, as the traditional powerhouse of chemical technology, has emerged as a major player in industrial biotechnology. Despite being one of the youngest in biotechnology education and research (in terms of duration and average faculty age), ICT has taken significant strides to emerge as country's major centre in biofuel and biochemical research," Yadav said.

"We have been number one in Chemical Engineering and Technology and it is a matter of great pride that we have now reached an apex position in Biotechnology. We are confident of maintaining this lead over the next few years," he said.

"Government of India(through Department of Biotechnology) has taken note of our work quality and content, and intends to enhance both biotech capability and infrastructure at ICT over the next years," he added.

Prof Arvind Lali is spearheading this campaign and has been chosen as the Leader of Indo-US Consortium on Biofuels, involving around 18 US and Indian universities and government labs and industries.

Lali said ICT is proud of many scientific and technology collaborations with major biotech institutes and industries in India and from around the world.

Research students at ICT, working in frontier areas like synthetic biology, enzyme catalysis, bio-separations and biofuel research, do their work at both ICT and collaborator ends. The technologies developed at ICT are being licensed by industries both in India and abroad, Yadav added.
