AMU's postpones executive council meet to select new V-C- 17-Sep-2011
Aligarh: The Aligarh Muslim University postponed till further notice the special executive council meeting, which was scheduled for tomorrow to prepare a panel of five names for appointing a successor to Vice-Chancellor Abdul Aziz.
The university has been "compelled" to take the decision in view of the fact that two members of the executive council, who are also senior members of the teaching staff, have conveyed in writing they would not participate in the proceedings, an official release said here.

"coming to an end within three months".
Professor Ashraf Malik, Principal J N Medical College and Sibghatullah Farooqui, Dean, Faculty of Commerce, have in a letter to the V-C have pointed out since there is "no representation of elected members of the teaching community in the executive council and four seats from the teachers' quota are lying vacant, they would prefer to refrain from participating in such a crucial meeting on moral grounds".
The stand taken by the two teachers is "a major setback" for Aziz, who is facing a CBI enquiry for alleged financial irregularities, according to senior faculty members.
The AMU Teachers' Association (AMUTA) has lauded the stand taken by the two teachers.
"It would have been an act of grave impropriety, had a person who is himself facing serious charges would have presided over a meeting which would decided the fate of his successor," Mustafa Zaidi, Secretary of the Association, said.
"It has been our consistent stand that Prof Aziz should be asked to proceed on leave and should not be allowed to participate in the selection process of his own successor till his name is cleared by the ongoing inquiry," Zaidi said.
On July 26, a CBI probe was ordered against the V-C on charges of financial irregularities in the university.
A team of CBI officials visited the campus and also questioned some senior officials in connection with the ongoing probe.
