The National Council for Teacher[NICTE] a Statutory Body of the Government of India established under the NCTE Act, 1993, grants course-wise recognition to an institution/university offering teacher education courses in the country. Any degree/diploma in Teacher Education, other than those recognized by NCTE, is not a valid qualification for purposes of employment as a teacher /teacher educator in any school/college/institute/university.NCTE grants recognition to the following courses indicated duration
B.Ed. B.P.Ed., M.Ed 1 year
Diploma in Early Childhood Education (D.E.C.Ed.), 2 years
Diploma in Elementary Education (D.EI.Ed.), D.P.Ed., M.P.Ed., 2 years
Diploma in arts (Visual Arts) / (Performing Arts) 2 years
D.EI.Ed., B.Ed., M.Ed. through Open and Distance Learning mode 2 years
B.EI.Ed. 4 years
Innovative courses
NCTE maintains a list of recognized courses/institutions on its website and websites of regional offices (www.ercncte.org, www.nctewrc.co.in, www.nrcncnte.org.,www.srcncte.in). Candidates desirous of pursuing any Teacher Training Course in face or distance mode are, therefore, advised to check the status of its recognition from theses websites or may write to NCTE for the same before joining any programme. The UGC is also maintaining a list of fake universities on its website (www.ugc.ac.in) and they are advised to refer to this list also before joining any teacher training programme.
Students, parents and the general public are requested to bring the names of such institutions which are offering teacher training courses not recognized by NCTE to the notice of the Member Secretary and the Regional Director of NCTE, in larger public interest and to facilitate action against such institutions on the following address/e-mail:
