My mentor- Education beyond four walls- 4-Sep-2015
'Students learning should never be restricted to 'rote learning'; they should grow up with comprehensive knowledge; their outlook should not just be confined to text books and all that they learn within the four walls of the classroom; but instead the education they get should be a process of 'learning through experience' and should be creative.. Only then they will have broader perspective about the world, was my reflection.
Two years have gone-by since I have started to implement education to my students based on the thought, 'Education beyond four walls'.
After completing 9 years of service as a teacher at a government aided school in Keelchevalpatti, I got this post of Head Master in the academic year of 2013 -2014. This new responsibility gave me the opportunity to accomplish my vision, 'Education beyond four walls'.
My point is that when learning happens through experience, it can never be forgotten at any point of time. Keeping this in mind, besides teaching, Tamil Poems and Prose like Thirukurral and Abirami Anthadhi through music and dance; I brought in several experts from various fields to provide motivational talks to students. Introduced learning through experience, taking students to Book Fair, Post office, Bank, Library, Research Laboratory in Colleges as field trips. This nurtured their self confidence. It fulfilled my dreams.
At this moment, to substantiate, who I am today, I proudly recollect my college days as an NCC coordinator that nurtured my leadership qualities and skills.
Besides this, at this time, when teachers day is to be celebrated, I also thankfully remember my chemistry, Mr. Surya Narayanan, who enhanced my thinking by saying, 'Your thoughts empower you to work confidently, making you a success and also my father, who always used to say, 'Never be hesitant in any situation; work with self-confidence'.
