It is necessary to conserve the environment and save the mankind from awaiting natural disasters due to the indiscriminate exploitation, depletion of natural resources and accompanied by environmental pollution. Therefore, in the recent days, awareness on environmental protection and natural resources is slowly on rise.

Execution of pollution control and eradication of waste products can only be carried out through multi-pronged approach and a well-planned systematic research. The science of environment is a blend of Social Science and Nature.
 
Nature of job
Environment is a part of eco system. Environmental education is both valuable and necessary. Besides being an extensive field, it contains abundant job opportunities. Many features of this science are quite new to India. But, it is a prominent department in foreign countries. Numerous job opportunities are available like-Environmental Expert, Environmental Engineers, Environmental Creator and Environmental Journalist.
 
Requirements in Industries
Environmental scientists are concerned with work related to Biodiversity, Waste Land Management, Environmental Balance and Protection of Natural Resources. Hence, the environmental scientists get lot of opportunities to work in industries associated with environment. They are involved in work concerned with pollution control and waste management.
 
Research and Development
Several universities and government-based institutions offer opportunities to experimenting jobs for undertaking Researches and developments.  They are involved in protecting the Natural Resources from the danger of Pollution. Forestry and Wild Life Management - As forests and wild life apart from enhancing the beauty of Earth also provide an eco-balance on the earth, hence the protection of forests and wild life is absolutely necessary at the moment.
 
Social Development
The Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) take the problems concerning the environment to the public. They also try to create awareness on environmental protection. Population control is also emphasized in this.
 
Environmental Experts
These people focus on cleaning-up of lakes, Rivers and Forests. Apart from their prime job of growing forests and creating new forests, they are also involved in creating awareness.
 
Environmental Journalism
It is important to publish news regarding environment since environmental awareness happens amidst public.  These journalists carry all news items regarding environment to the public through newspapers.
 
Counsellors 
Private counsellors who work along with both the Central and the State Government Pollution Control Board, give right suggestions to the Government. They also provide legal information to industries regarding environmental protection. Some of them concentrate on Project Planning, Pollution Control, Eco- Balance and Protection.
 
Educational Qualification
To work as a scientist in this field, one has to complete Post graduation in Environmental Science or ME in Environmental Chemical Engineering. Those who have completed Bsc/Msc in Environmental Science are selected to administer the NGOs. Generally, this field of study is available as a Postgraduate programme.
 
Job Opportunities
In this field, several job opportunities are available in India. Great dearth of professionals prevails to write environmental articles for creating awareness among the public. Opportunities are available for scientists to get into Mining, Fertilizer Manufacturing Unit, Textile Industry, Dying Units and Food Processing Unit.
Moreover, there is a constant need for NGOs, and the NGOs are likely to provide Rs5, 000/- to 11,000/-pm.; the Researcher can earn about Rs.12, 000/- and a teacher can get about Rs 7,000 to 10,000 pm as salary.
 
Specialized studies are offered in this field at IIT- Bangalore, Wild Life Institute of India-Dehradun, Bombay Natural History Society- Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru University-Delhi, and G.P.Pant University of Agricultural Technology, Uttar Pradesh.
