Girls more intersted in Engineering- 20-Nov-2008
It was found that the present day girls are very much interested in taking up Engineering courses. In 2002, While the girls opting for engineering were only 22%, this year it has soared up to 125%. Reason for this radical change is said to be the awareness it has brought out in the society in economy.
Many are keen in taking up Information Technology and System Engineering, may be due to their knowledge in increasing economy says ASSOCHAM.
A review in 20 Engineering colleges including National Institute of Technology (NIT OR REC) in India reveals that many girls turn down subjects like Aerospace and Material Engineering but are deeply fascinated by System Engineering, which shows an increased percentage of nearly 40%. Further, the study states that girls perform better than boys. Job guarantee, good remuneration and numerous job opportunities these courses are preferred. 90% of girls have chosen Engineering as they have secured good marks and 71% of girls, for job opportunities . 79% of boys take up Engineering because of their good marks and also to face challenges in life.
Among those who have completed the courses, 97% of boys and 93%of girls have become Engineers. Marital situation prevents 3% of girls from taking up jobs. Only 71% of boys and 29% of girls who are currently engineers are willing to take up management position. Preferences are provided to boys by many organizations since boys can spend longer hours at the work spot. 55% of boys and 26% of girls opined that equal opportunities are given to them at the working spot. The study alos reveals that prejudice and favoritism prevail in Agriculture and Production sector. 86% girls and 24% boys seek advice from their parents in deciding about their studies related to engineering.
