Importance: Perfusion technicians assist the anesthetist and surgeon in simple and complex surgical procedures. They ensure that there is continuous blood circulation and that the circulation is fine during entire surgery.
Responsibilities: During an open heart surgery the function of the heart and lungs is taken over by a temporary external machine. They ensure that these machines function at the right level without any glitches. Apart from this they monitor right level of oxygenated blood is in circulation to ensure that other human organs arent deprived of oxygen.
Skills required: Perfusion technician should be well versed with human circulatory system. They should have the dexterity to handle the devices that replace the function of heart and the lung. To include they should be knowledgeable to trouble shoot any problem arising in these during surgery as well as off surgery.
Qualification: To study BSc Perfusion Technology, it is important to have studied Physics, Chemistry and Biology as major subjects at the plus two level with a pass mark of 50%. Students having completed BSc. Physics can directly join PG programme in Perfusion Technology course.
