India needs innovation movement, says Purandeswari- 6-Apr-2012
Chennai: Observing that the country was passing through a phase of 'islands of development in a sea of underdevelopment', Minister of State for HRD D Purandeswari said an "Indian Innovation Movement" should be launched to enable the country attain its rightful place in the comity of nations.
"
We had launched a freedom movement during 19th and 20th centuries which gave us freedom from the stronghold of foreign powers. Similarly, we must now launch an 'Indian Innovation Movement', as it were, so that India can assume its rightful place in the comity of nations. And the time to do it is now, at the dawn of the new millennium", she said.
Emphasising the need to devote a lot more focus on the development growth of the country's leadership at various levels, she said what was being witnessed now was islands of development in a sea of underdevelopment. "The dichotomy of opposites is the most difficult part to handle."
Noting that innovators were those who did not accept that something could not be done, she said Indian history was full of such people like Dr Verghese Kurien, E Sreedharan, Ratan Tata and Sam Pitroda.
She said the demographic differentials revealed that over the next 20-30 years, India has distinct advantages in a population profile concentrated in the younger age group where many new opportunities could be fully optimized.
The economy was looking up and poised for a phenomenal growth, the Minister said adding the past few years had proved that the thought of India becoming an economic superpower was no longer outlandish. "We could argue about the timeframe, but the possibility is real, almost inevitable,"she said.
"We have to give up the pace with which things move today and we must take a quantum leap in the speed with which we do things," she told the students at the Sri Muthukumaran Institute of Technology on the Graduation Day.
