BTech students involved in robbery- 7-Apr-2012
New Delhi: They pulled off the first one with ease but a second trip to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to allegedly commit another theft landed two BTech students, who had lost money in cricket betting, in the police net.
The duo -- Bhagat Singh and Shashwat Biswal -- had allegedly stolen on March 14 three credit cards, PAN card, identity card and purse from the office of Vyjayanti Raghavan, an Associate Professor in JNU's School of Language, Literature and Culture Study where she teaches Korean.
Singh and Biswal, sons of employees of IIT-Delhi, were arrested from the University campus on April three after they were found in suspicious circumstances near a teacher's room, a senior police official said. They are pursuing second year BTech from a private college.
A case under sections 380 (theft) and 34 (common intention) were registered against them, a senior police official said.
The duo landed in custody after a teacher of JNU's French Centre found them there in mysterious circumstances.
Raghavan said the incident took place at around 10:45 AM on March 14 when she had gone out of her office for five minutes. She informed police and filed a complaint.
Later, Raghavan told, she got a text message informing her that her credit card was used in three shops in Lajpat Nagar for shopping and over Rs 13,000 was deducted.
"I and my students went to these shops and viewed the CCTV footages. From one of the shops, we managed to get the footage downloaded on a pendrive. This footage was shown to my colleagues and students but none could identify them.
"My office is on the third floor. I was surprised that such a theft happened there and the theives managed to flee without being caught," she said.
The second time, Raghavan said, they came to the campus, they were having the same bagpack on their shoulders which were seen on the footage and the teacher got alerted. The guards were also called.
"I was also informed and when we reached the spot, we found one of them trying to check whether the room of a teacher was locked or not," she said.
The youths were taken to office room and were shown the footage when they denied any involvement in the theft. However, she claimed, they could not give any satisfactory explanation why they were there.
"They were really frightened. They had convincing reason to be there and this made us more suspicious. I told them to tell us the truth as teachers may show leniency but not the police. Then one of them said that he wanted to talk to me privately.
"However, my colleagues also came with me where he then confessed. When we asked why they committed thefts, one of them said the other guy had lost money in cricket betting. We don't know but this is what they told us," she said.
