Need to grab talents from villages too!- 27-Jul-2017

I personally feel that the quality of engineering students have come down over past few years. Although, facilities, opportunities have increased today in colleges and society, but I dont find improvement in the skills of the engineering students.

Repeatedly changing governments have brought down the minimum eligibility criteria for the admission to Engineering studies. Now, they have made it as 40% in plus two is enough to get into engineering colleges.  As there are lots of seats available in engineering studies, even students with low marks easily get admission to the colleges. Students joining like this find it difficult to complete engineering. On the other hand, engineering is not a course that can be cleared through memorizing.

In a situation where these students are unable to pass engineering studies, soon develop a mind-set to get engineering degree by all means. Making them pass has become the prime priority of the engineering colleges. Colleges are not able to provide the real, good standard of engineering studies.

Engineering studies that requires to study with the ability to research, experience and understand, should get the right students. Apart from this, need to have a situation that minimum of 60% of marks must be required towards admission to engineering colleges.  Only then, colleges will be able to move to the next level of teaching.

Although, lakhs of students are there in our country, only very few findings and research have been carried out. The main reason for this is admitting students who are not fit for engineering studies. Another reason is that the curriculum is not upgraded to needs of the industry. Engineering curriculum should be amended at least once in 5 years time.

Keeping this on one side, industries/ companies do not go on head hunting to colleges that are in the small villages which has lot of talented students. Hence, students with vigour, interest and skills do not get enough opportunity. Industries should leave behind this biased approach and should go searching for these students too.  Lot of talent is available in small colleges in the villages. The industries should come forward to grab these talents.
