Both gets the child the same thing. One is skillful and one is not. Which would you prefer? Teach it.

Give candy only to the preferred behaviour. Unskillful behaviour is likely to disappear.

When children misbehave, it is usually due to the lack of skills. Skills that you and I have but they dont. Skills that their friends and teachers have but they dont.

So in trying to get your children to behave, teach them the skills that theyre lacking while in the long queue to see the doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist, occupational therapist, counsellor or speech therapist, because youll pretty much hear the same thing when you get to see them.

The professionals themselves will not have time to teach your children skills but they can guide you. Since professionals are hard to come by, use other resources such as your family, friends, teachers, and your childrens friends who have the skills to teach your children so that they dont have to misbehave anymore.

What skills are these?

Adaptive Behaviour Skills:

Communication Skills
 Language comprehension skills
 Expressive language skills
 Written communication skills

Daily Living Skills
 Self-care skills
 Domestic skills
 Community skills
 Academic skills

Socialisation Skills
 Play skills
 Friendship skills
 Emotional regulation skills

Motor Movement Skills
 Fine motor skills
 Gross motor skills

The skills above all contribute to functional independence, self-efficacy, self-confidence and self-esteem, making an individual who has adequate collection of skills someone who is well-adjusted and a functional member of the community.

Any basic level of skills missing from the whole set usually results in emotional and behavioural problems.
