Dialysis Technology:

Kidney dialysis technicians, more commonly known as renal dialysis or hemodialysis technicians, work in dialysis centers and hospitals under the supervision of registered nurses. Duties include equipment setup, patient preparation, and administration of treatment to patients with kidney failure or chronic kidney disease.

These technicians are responsible for monitoring patients, checking blood pressure, and obtaining pertinent health information.

Kidney dialysis technicians often work with extremely ill patients. Technicians can work day or night, and some hospitals schedule technicians on shifts. Extensive patient interaction requires technicians to establish excellent communication.

Dialysis technician training is usually offered at the certificate level, although degree programs are also available.

Certificate programs are generally two semesters long and award a technical diploma or certificate upon graduation. Academic coursework and clinical experiences teach students about medical terminology, patient care, and operation of dialysis equipment. Some programs require cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and a year of high school or college biology as prerequisites.

A degree program includes coursework in basic hemodialysis principles and procedures, medical terminology, anatomy, and diagnostic procedures, as well as a required number of hours in clinical experience. These are three year programs.

Audiology and Speech Language Pathology:

Audiologists are concerned with the identification, measurement, and study of hearing and hearing impairments and with the treatment of persons with hearing disorders. Speech-language pathologists are specialists who diagnose and treat individuals with speech, language, voice, literacy and fluency disorders.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

Some even choose to conduct research into speech and hearing. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists assess, diagnose, treat, and help to prevent speech and hearing problems caused by accidents, diseases, and genetic disorders.

Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology is a four year course including one year compulsory internship. Under the curriculum they will study the production of speech and language and work with children and adults who have disorders affecting their ability to communicate and study the physical, physiological and psychological aspects of hearing, and provide intervention and technology-based rehabilitation to persons with hearing loss and problems with balance.

Speech-language pathology and audiology are professions consistently rated among the best careers for the changing job landscape. They are employed in a variety of school and healthcare settings such as schools, clinics and hospitals.
