Pressmart launches mobile phone learning solution- 3-Jul-2012
Hyderabad: Pressmart, an online publishing provider, launched its Mobile Learning Classroom Application (MOCA) for Personal Learning Device Project by LaSalle Green Hills, a school in Manila, Philippines.
MOCA implemented on Samsung tablet is basically a central hub for school students — a one-stop shop of sorts for all their school needs. The application houses their books, their homework, as well as questions and exams, Pressmart Chairman Vikram Simha Torpunuri told reporters here.
"Pressmart MOCA is a paperless, tablet-based end-to-end solution for schools based on a private-cloud based interactive education system aimed at making learning an interesting, enjoyable and collaborative experience on mobile devices," he said.
Nearly 4,000 students from Grade 1 to Grade 12, use an 8.9-inch Samsung tabled powered by Google's Android 3.2 Honeycomb mobile operating system and Pressmart's MOCA application, he said.
The e-tablet initiative involving Pressmart MOCA, which LSGH dubbed as PEARL or Personal Learning Device Project, consists of five phases of implementation. The first phase, where the project currently is, involves merely replacing textbooks with tablet devices, he said.
"La Salle has 17 schools with 97,000 students in Philippines, for which they will start deploying MOCA slowly. We also see a potential in Thailand, where the government is planning to distribute 800,000 tablets to primary school students this year," he said.
The closely-held company is currently in talks with various state governments, schools and institutions in India, he said, and is looking at doing two pilots in the domestic market during the current calendar year.
