Students protest against 'regional reservation'- 4-Jul-2012
Puducherry: Students of government colleges here extended support to the campaign by Students Federation of Puducherry and protested the regional reservation for admission to engineering, medical and other professional courses in the union territory.
Students of the Government Tagore Arts college abstained from classes and raised slogans against regional reservation and also joined the campaign. Students of a gvoernment polytechnic launched demonstration criticising it.
Political party leaders are also against the policy as they fear it would unnecessarily cause disharmony among students and whip up regional feelings among the youth and have called for its reconsideration .
Puducherry government introduced an 18 per cent quota of reservation for students of Karaikal region, four per cent for those from Mahe and three per cent for Yanam students in professional colleges.
On a petition in 2010 by Students Parents Federation questioning the regional reservation, a court quashed the proposal to introduce the remaining 75 per cent for students of Puducherry region
Federation of People`s Rights secretary G Sugumaran urged the government to immediately constitute a high level committee to go into the issue by associating legislators, academics and others adept in educational matters and said its recommendations should be accommodated in a Bill which could either eliminate the reservation or modify the policy.
He wanted immediate action as counselling was on July 9 for admission to medical and engineering courses in colleges run by the government or by government sponsored societies.
Sugumaran said a detailed memorandum had already been submitted to the Lt Governor, Chief Minister and Chief Secretary in this regard.
