Chennai: Management of private schools needs to take appropriate steps to avoid students bringing needless note books, rather emphasis on bring only necessary ones to school, ordered, Sabitha, secretary, TN School Education department.

Studies have proved that students face lot of physical deformities at a very early age due to carrying of overloaded school bags.

After carrying out detailed study in this regard, the Tamil Nadu Government brought lot of changes like amalgamating subject books in to a single book for each session of the newly introduced Trimester system for classes 1 to 8 from last June.

Although, burden of carrying heavy bags have come down in Govt and Govt Aided schools, students of Matriculation and Anglo Indian schools loom to still carry heavy bags.

Only 60 % of notebooks provided by the schools are being used, with 40% going unused.

Recently, in a surprise inspection held at a Matriculation School in Ramanathapuram, Karmegam, Join Director of Matriculation Schools happened to find students carrying bags weighing 30 Kg out of which 10 Kg were note books.

While enquiring if the notebookswere meant for that particular day, he found the student was carrying mostly unnecessary notebooks.

Meanwhile, when the joint director checked bag of another student, who is the child of a teacher working in the same school, it was found to weigh only 3.5 Kg.

Probing into the issue, it was found that the teacher used to place only the required notebooks for the day in the bag of the child.

Following this, he strictly instructed the management not to force students to bring unnecessary notebooks to school.

Briefing on this issue, Sabitha, secretary, TN School Education department stated that complaints have been received on schools pressing school children to bring needless notebooks to school. Authorities of private schools should instruct children to bring only necessary notebooks like Govt schools and Govt. Aided schools. Soon all the private schools will receive a circular regarding this, she told.
