Aligarh Muslim University, situated in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was started in the year 1875.  This is one of the few higher educational institutions initiated in the British regime.  Many students of this University had leading role during the Independent struggle.  When it was started,  it functioned along with the Calcutta University and later it was affiliated to the Allahabad University.

In the year 1920, the status of Central University was granted to this insitution.  This University was created in the model of the famous Cambridge University in Great Britain.  At present, there are more than 80 Departments with 280 courses and 30,000 students.  For a few particulat courses, seats are allotted to the students of the SAARC and Commonwealth countries.  About 2000 faculty members are serving here.

The University has planned to have five new zones.  Bhopal at Madhya Pradesh, Pune in Mahahrashtra,  Murshidhabad at West Bengal, Malappuram in Kerala and Bihars Katihar are the polaces chosen for this purpose.  The Library of this University has one lakh books.  Many rare books are well-protected in this Library.  The seven-storeyed Library is situated in a secluded 5 acre ground amidst a lovely sylvan surroundings.

The former President of India, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Pakistans first Prime Minister, Liaquat Ali Khan, Frontier Gandhi, Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, the present Vice-President, Hameed Ansari, Raja Rao, the renowned novelist,  the Hindi movie star, Nazaruddin Shah, Javeed Akhtar, Hindi lyricist, the former Central Minister, Ahmed Kidwai and the former Prime Minister of Kashmir, Sheikh Abdullah are the well-known alumni of this University.
