The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication.

It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

Those students planning to study Under Graduation, Post Graduation and Research oriented studies abroad should take up IELTS. In addition, those who want to apply for overseas educational scholarship should take up this examination.  Apart from the above, those who wish to improve their English knowledge can take up this examination.

IELTS comprises of two modules.

1. IELTS Academic

2. IELTS General

IELTS Academic is exclusively for those students who are willing to pursue higher studies abroad. Those planning to migrate to countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and few other European countries in pursuit of jobs need to apply for IELTS General.

Both, IELTS comprises of four sections Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

Test of Listening involves four sections.

The Reading test has three sections and texts totaling 2,150-2,750 words.

There will be a variety of question types, such as multiple choice, short-answer questions, identifying information, identifying writers views, labeling diagrams, completing a summary using words taken from the text and matching information, headings, features in the text and sentence endings.

Students should be careful when writing down their answers as they will lose marks for incorrect spelling and grammar.

Writing test has two tasks to be completed.

In task 1, students should write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes. In task 2 the students need to write at least 250 words in about 40 minutes. Test takers will be penalized if their answer is too short or does not relate to the topic.

The speaking test is a face-to-face interview between the test taker and an examiner.

Finally, the speaking test contains three sections.

Scoring

Test takers receive a score for each test component Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The individual scores are then averaged and rounded to produce an overall score.
