Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is standardized test to measure English language ability of non-native speakers desirous of enrolling in English Speaking universities. Not just students alone take up TOEFL; people from various walks of life take up TOEFL test to realize their language strength.   


The TOEFL test is available in 2 formats one that is delivered via the internet, and one that is a paper test. 97 percent of TOEFL test takers worldwide take the TOEFL iBT test, delivered via the internet, and access continues to expand. The TOEFL iBT test is desired by universities because it measures all 4 communication skills reading, listening, speaking, and writing.


 Generally, universities and colleges in America, Canada, Australia and UK, admit foreign students based on TOEFL scores. 


TOEFL scores is also important for obtaining scholarships, research work, job opportunities and obtaining Visa for studies and jobs. 


TOEFL comprises of both internet based test (TOFEL iBT) as well as paper based test (TOFEL PBT) 


TOFEL iBT: TOEFL iBT test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks.


This exam is taken up across the globe through internet. The exam, based on Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) comprises of 3 -5 passages containing  36-56 questions lasting about 60-80 minutes questions in reading;  6 9 passages containing 34-51 questions in listening  running upto 60-90 minutes; in speaking it comprises of 6 practical questions; and writing comprises of 2 activities. This exam runs upto 4 hour and 30 minutes.    


Paper delivered Test:   


As of July 2017, the TOEFL Paper Based Test was discontinued and replaced by the revised TOEFL Paper Delivered Test. The new paper test aligns more closely to the TOEFL iBT test.


For those test takers who don't have access to the TOEFL iBT test, there is the revised TOEFL Paper-Delivered Test. The revised TOEFL Paper-delivered Test is only offered in locations where testing via the internet is not available.


The revised paper test requires test takers to combine their communication skills for example, listening to a lecture, reading a passage, and then writing a response. Integrating skills gives a more accurate indication of a test takers ability to communicate in English.


This format of exam, TOEFL paper delivered that runs upto 2 hours and 50 minutes, is Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), comprising of 42 questions in Reading, 34 questions in listening and 2 tasks in writing.


TOEFL exam that is conducted over 50 times in a year can be taken up anyone and any number of times. The TOEFL scores are only valid for 2 years time.
