Introduction:
International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi, is a subsidiary component of the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, established in 1983, through the signing of its Statutes (the international treaty sanctioning its existence, deposited with the Secretary General of the United Nations) by 26 countries during a Plenipotentiary Meeting, held in Madrid. ICGEB conducts innovative research in life sciences for the benefit of developing countries by providing them a scientific and educational environment of the high standard. ICGEB brings Biotechnology to its Member States by strengthening their research capabilities, developing state-of-the-art research and training scientists. More than 300 people from 28 different countries presently work in the ICGEB laboratories as research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, research technicians and administrative personnel. International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, New Delhi is a state-of-the-art Institute with a building area of 10000 sq.m. that houses laboratories equipped with the most technologically advanced scientific instrumentation. ICGEB New Delhi focuses mainly on research in mammalian and plant biology. ICGEB New Delhi promotes the safe use of biotechnology.

Admissions and Eligibility at ICGEB New Delhi

  • For admissions to the various programs at ICGEB New Delhi, candidates must make prior contact with the Group Leader of their choice at ICGEB New Delhi, as listed, and obtain prior agreement on their proposed research project.
  • For admissions to the Postdoctoral Fellowships, candidates must be nationals of an ICGEB Member State and may not apply for fellowships to be undertaken in the country of their origin. Italian/Indian nationals who are resident abroad may apply for fellowships to ICGEB Trieste/New Delhi, respectively, and must provide evidence that they are working/living abroad. The candidate should have a recent Ph.D. degree or have at least 3 years' research experience. Preference will be given to candidates below 35 years of age.
  • For admissions to the Ph.D. Program, Indian candidates who have cleared the National Eligibility Test (JRF) conducted by CSIR / UGC / ICMR / DBT are eligible for application. Selection will be based on a written test ( if required ) followed by interview. There is no prescribed age limit for joining the Ph.D. Program.
  • The Flexible Fellowship Program is aimed at students who are involved in a Ph.D. project in their own country that falls within the research fields of an ICGEB Group. This Program enables students to carry out some of the research experiments that are foreseen in their own university Ph.D. study plan at the ICGEB laboratories in Italy and India, in agreement with both the home supervisor and the ICGEB Group Leader. For admissions to the Flexible Fellowships, candidates must be nationals of an ICGEB Member State and may not apply for fellowships to be undertaken in the country of their origin
    ICGEB New Delhi has a number of state-of-the-art facilities to facilitate the various research activities of its scholars.
Facilities at ICEG, New Delhi
ICGEB New Delhi provides its students with grants for equipment, computational and communication facilities, consumables, contingencies, administrative support, international travel costs and other special requirements.
