This polytechnic college was started by Late Thiru G.D.Naidu in 1945 by the name as Arthur Hope Polytechnic in upplilipalayam. In 1954 this polytechnic was shifted from upplilipalayam to the present campus (19.5 hectare). In 1955-56 the name of this polytechnic was changed to Government Polytechnic. In 1957 civil, mechanical and electrical engineering diploma course were introduced. In June 1977 diploma course in Electronics & Communication engineering course was introduced in this polytechnic. Part time diploma course in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical engineering was introduced in this polytechnic in the year 1982 - 83.
