Overview
Optometrists examine people's eyes to diagnose vision problems and eye diseases. Optometrists prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses, and provide vision therapy and low vision rehabilitation. Optometrists should not be confused with ophthalmologists who perform eye surgery, and diagnose and treat eye diseases and injuries. Like optometrists they also examine eyes and prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses.
Optometrists use instruments and observation to examine eye health and to test patient's visual acuity, depth and co lour perception, and their ability to focus and coordinate the eyes. They analyse test results and develop a treatment plan.
Opticians fit and adjust eyeglasses. They do not do any sight-testing or other eye examination.
Optometrists need mathematical and scientific interest to make accurate observation and calculation. Patience, manual dexterity, a confident manner are important skills for the work of an optometrist.
Employment prospects
Optometrists can seek placement in ophthalmic hospitals and clinics. All ophthalmic surgeons in their private practice use the service of optometrists to get the eye testing done before the ophthalmic surgeon checks them for eye diseases/problems. Many opticians use the services of optometrists for their eye testing skills and checking lenses, etc
Scope for growth is greater for those who do the graduate course but individual experience and expertise can ensure good prospects. Those who keep themselves updated in the use of the new sophisticated machines/equipment and advanced technologies will always find better opening with more prominent private practitioners and hospitals.
