Medical students take out march for equal UG, PG seats- 27-Aug-2013
Jaipur: Over 300 medical students took out a march in the city demanding equal seats in undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses.
The march was part of the nation wide call "save doctor" by Indian Medical Association.
Students of Sawai Man Singh Medical College and Hospital, dressed in lab coats and sporting black ribbons, marched from SMS Hospital to Amar Jawan Jyoti here.
IMA's West Zone Executive Dr Abhishek Saxena told media, "the gathering and the walk we had today across India is just our humble appeal to make our voices heard. We want leaders to take action and save future".
"There are 47,600 UG seats which is likely to reach 50,000 shortly due to the progressive steps taken by Medical Council of India (MCI). Whereas there only 12,000 PG seats available in clinical disciplines. In comparison, in a developed country such as USA, there are 19,000 UG seats and 32,000 PG, and fellowship seats," he said.
"With a pass out rate of 80 to 90 per cent, nearly 40,000 doctor graduate every year, and compete for the 12,000 seats with their batch mates and over a lakh seniors," Saxena said.
